Loxton Library, Visitor Information & Cultural Centre

The project brief was to create a multi-purpose and highly technologically advanced Public Civic Centre for the town of Loxton, as a replacement of the outdated existing facility.

Essential elements in the design included parking availability for staff & visitors along with accessibility. The building was required to enhance natural daylight, be environmentally sustainable and durable given its potential high use. An enclosed outdoor activity/ retreat space for users to connect with the outdoors was a fundamental component in the project's overall scope along with the implementation of an external after hours returns receptacle providing patrons with additional convenience. 

Staff were at the forefront of the design detail including workrooms for item processing, programming and volunteers. The customer service area boasts six workstations for ease and enjoyment. A managers office provides the opportunity for private meetings as required. A storage area houses debited items, program materials, exhibition furniture/ props and the like and a kitchen and accessible toilet provide additional convenience to staff.

Upon entry, the Visitor Information Service is offered by way of interpretive displays, digital advertising/ promotion screens, produce, printed resources and pod desks. Local history exhibition and work areas combining storage for goods and artefacts is essential. A meeting/ technology training room with smart TV, sink & tea/coffee making facilities is offered to users, and has outside accessibility for after-hours use. The public have direct access to computers, printing services and the business area. A study/collaborative space for individual laptop use with access to general power & data ports is readily available. The lounge/relaxation area and retreat spaces allow for quiet reading. Children’s activity/wet area & program storage provides children with the opportunity to explore and create individually or in a group or class setting. Public amenities incorporating a parent’s room & accessible toilet are provided to all users. A vast display area allows flexibility of the library collection for the implementation of Arts/Cultural & Event space.
